A taste--

New York (NY) - Craig Venter, the U.S. scientist involved heavily in the effort to decipher the human genome, has made a startling announcement. He intends to create the first artificial lifeform made from man-made, or constructed DNA, built entirely from laboratory chemicals. Venter said, "...we are going from reading our genetic code to the ability to write it. That gives us the hypothetical ability to do things never contemplated before." Venter will announce the official results of his work at a currently undisclosed exact time, but sometime within the next few weeks.

Point
Venter's current creation is an artificial chromosome comprised of 381 genes and 580,000 base pairs. This places it close to the simplest bacteria which have about 600,000 base pairs. The human genome has about 25,000 genes and 3 billion base pairs........

RE: New Lifeform from Artificial DNA
Oh goody, then this "new race" can grow rapidly, multiply and take over the human race. This Craig Venter will forever be known as the man responsible. Does he really want that on his conscience? But then again, he'll probably be the first to die in the lab when his evolved creature turns on him sucking out all of his bodily liquids, and then his hot low-cut lab coat assistant (from whom is most likely having an affair with) screams when she sees this horrific sight and the monster now turns his target to her and we now have two mysterious deaths on our heads who's bodies have been sucked dry and the police investigator knows what really happened cause the good scientist was a good drinking buddy of his but will his Chief believe him? No, of course not! Then the investigator teams up with the Lethal Weapon version of Mel Gibson and they take the monster down!
